Everything You Dreamed Of...

Video in mind for this week's download: [link]

I think it's clear which game is this week's download, so let's get to it.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES, 1988): I'm sure everyone of you knows that this is OUR sequel to the first Super Mario Bros. game for the NES, right? Of course you all do. Anyway, i remember that i did received this one as a Christmas gift when i was a kid, not to mention that i did received it more than two months after getting my NES console, along with the first Super Mario game and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out game, although before that, i did heard about it in a Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter... and let me just say that when i heard about a character named Toad, at first, i thought that he was someone resembling a bit like some elf-like character, meaning like the little character from Tecmo's Solomon's Key. But when i played that game and saw the true look of Toad, i was like WTF. Really? One of the Mushroom Retainers from the first Super Mario game? In any event, this game marked the first time that both Toad and Peach became playable for the very first time, not to mention that it also showcased Luigi's true jumping abilities, even though he did first showcased them before in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in Japan. It also marked the debut of many baddies, such as Shy-Guys, Snifits and Ninjis that would be seen again in future Mario games, except those of the 8-Bit Club crew, those being Mouser, Triclyde, Clawgrip and Wart. Birdo did first debuted in this game and we'd have to wait until the year 2000 to see him/her again in another Mario game.

Also, the stomping enemies rule in that one was out of the window. Instead, we could pick them up and toss them at other enemies, as well as pick veggies (the main weakness of Wart, as revealed in the instruction manual of the game), Mushroom Blocks and more. Needless to say, it first took me many tries to finally beat this game, though now, i'm no longer having trouble with it, since it's quite an easy game for me. Then again, the difficulty level is quite amazing, seeing that this game was remade from the Famicom Disk System game, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, seeing that it was considered as a prototype version of the Super Mario Bros. 2 game for North America and Europe. Japan would eventually get this version of our Super Mario 2, but they changed the title as Super Mario USA, making it their fifth installment of the Super Mario series... and created more confusion as to which order does the Super Mario series stands. Oh well.
